You may think that we have more visitors than work…it’s not true! We welcome visitors and it’s nice to learn from others, catch up on all the latest news and show them round our little dairy and wholesale side with a certain amount of pride. Yes, we are proud of our little place.
Today, Alan Foster-Smith from Orchard Valley came to say hello. This is his second visit to see us, to discuss starter cultures, rennet, cheese wax and the like; it is always nice to see him.
Armed with a cup of strong black coffee, we persuaded Alan to try samples from our different new Yorkshire Gouda trials. We put three out for him to try. We know which one we are going to go with, but it was really useful to have an ‘expert’ opinion. We were very pleased to get the thumbs up for the one we are about to launch, from a man with over ten years’ experience with Danisco and now at Orchard Valley.
Is that like the man from Del Monte?
We’ve actually had three cheese tastings this morning, first, Jonathan, our goat milk man who really liked our new gouda – it is made with milk from his goats, then Alan and finally, Steve, our jovial Parcelforce man. It has met with unanimous approval. Come along to Fodder, Harrogate, on Saturday 5th Feb to be the first to try it!
I mentioned to Alan, our friends Brytec who make, supply and service cheese making equipment, amongst other things, about their new blog and he was very interested and took their number away as he visits many cheese makers, one who needs a blue cheese piercing machine – Brytec make these and another who needs a new small cheese vat – Brytec have one on their blog that they have refurbed and is for sale.
I must also say a big thank you to Trevor at Orchard Valley for helping me tweak my Yorkshire Gouda recipe and for listening to me when a trial turned into fetta and then back again in to Gouda, it really was the weirdest thing.
