A Customer Goes Down

I think it is sad when a business goes down, irrespective of how well run it was or wasn’t: there are staff to pay and make redundant, premises to close, equipment to sell and suppliers to pay, including us and no doubt a whole host of others.

A customer of ours, Bruce Oliver has just gone in to liquidation.  He was a wholesaler of cheese.

Bruce Oliver, a contemporary of my uncle’s, started the business in the 1980s in Easingwold, N. Yorkshire and sold it to Andy Kirk at the same time I took over my uncle’s business.  In this way, Andy and I had a bit in common; we had both taken on a business that was not necessarily in our immediate comfort zone or that we had experience in, so we swapped news, ideas and information from time to time and he bought our cheese.

Ok, we frequently did not see eye to eye about how quickly we were paid (our terms are 28 days!) but Andy always seemed a hard working guy with plans for the future.

Today, I discovered, the liquidators have been called in.  This is increasingly a sign of the times.  Good luck to you Andy in whatever you find yourself doing next.

  1. Very sad indeed, all the best to Andy and Sue. It must be a terrible burden knowing that you owe your suppliers thousands and your staff their wages. They probably could do with another holiday to recover.

      Hey, I agree….am sure they owe staff wages, and creditors, they owe us! You too? Does anyone know what happened?

      I wasn’t best pleased when chasing my money in January to discover they were on holiday.

      But it is still, I think, sad that they’ve gone down.

      Who are you, Mr Blue Beard? Do we know each other?

    My family recently opened a food hall/deli within our garden centre in Durham & Bruce Olivers was our main cheese supplier.

    I was so sad to hear the news about the company & met our new representative Tim yesterday. I never got the chance to meet the owners, but I’ve heard a lot of wonderful things about them.

    It’s a tough economy at the moment, & such a shame things come to an end like this… But the positive thing is that they can be rest assured their company that they’ve grown & developed through the years is in safe hands now & by the sounds of things will be as of a success as they had it on the good days.

    Brambles food hall would just like to wish Bruce Olivers staff & directors all the best in life & to stay positive. Everything happens for a reason…

  3. We are so sorry to hear about bruce oliver going bust, these are hard times and money is ever so tight. We wouldn’t like to make a gain on his hardship but if anyone needs a supplier in quick Cryer & Stott can come through & discuss your options so you are not stuck for cheeses including Iona’s lovely produce.
